Book promotion - Mortal Cities & Forgotten Monuments by Arna Mačkić will be held on 14.12 (Thursday) at 18:00 in the Meeting Point cinema.
Arna Mačkić is an architect based in Amsterdam. Since 2009 she is part of the core design team of RAAAF (Rietveld Architecture-Art-Affordances), and in 2013 she started a design research on the cultural heritage of former Yugoslavia: the monuments commemorating the victims of fascism during the Second World War and destroyed cultural heritage during the Bosnian war (1992-1995).
Mortal Cities & Forgotten Monuments tells a moving story of architecture and history. The first two parts of the book provide historical background on the war in Bosnia and its relationship to the built environment of the region. The final section demonstrates Mackic's ideas for architectural interventions, applying a new design language that goes beyond political religious, or cultural interpretations - an openness that allows it avoid tensions and claims of truth without ignoring or denying the past. Using this as a foundation, she proposes designs for urban and public space that are simultaneously rooted in ancient traditions while looking toward the future.
